The Front Room
The rooms: The Practice · The Readings · Questions · The Front Room. Before you write · Write a letter.
Letters are read before they are printed. You write, and then you wait, and a reply comes the way a reply to a letter comes: in days, not minutes.
Everything else.
The front room is where a house puts whoever does not fit a category. The neighbour who came about the bins and stayed an hour. The thing you wanted to say to somebody who would understand it, which is not about the order, not about a passage, and not a question, and is still worth saying.
So: what you are grateful for. What has been hard. Something you noticed on the way to work and have not been able to shake since. A book, a hymn, a small habit that has held when other things did not. Where your household is, and how it is going.
Keep it to what you would say to a stranger at your own table. That is more than people expect, and a good deal less than the internet usually gets.
One question to open the room: what has been good this week, however small it was?
The letters
Nothing has come in yet. Somebody has to go first, and there is no shame in being the one who does.
